About
The Singapore Slingers were incorporated in March, 2006, and are the only professional indoor sports team in Singapore. The team Plays in the 11,000 seat Singapore Indoor Stadium providing state of the art basketball entertainment and hospitality. Through affordable tickets and attractive promotions the Singapore Slingers target young Singaporean fans, families as well as expats living in Singapore. The team is very active in the community and work with the Basketball Association of Singapore in the promotion of the sport through Singapore schools.
For the past two seasons since the inception of the Slingers, the team has played in the Australian NBL. In July of 2008, the Board of the Slingers decided to withdraw from the Australian competition and look to a more Asian based focus. The 2008/09 season commencing in September, will see the Slingers hosting teams throughout the region in the ‘Singapore Challenge Series’. Teams from the Philippines, China, Indonesia, India and Australia will be coming to Singapore to play the Slingers in a series of International games. The Challenge series is an interim competition that will lead to the team playing in an ASEAN professional League. Slingers Chairman Tony Fernandes is leading the charge for the introduction of the league which will benefit the sport of basketball throughout the ASEAN region.
The decision to fully concentrate on playing in the basketball rich environment of Asia is a major step in line with the initial thinking that the Slingers would one day play in the more relevant geographic and historical of Asia. These recent developments have tremendous positive implications for the Slingers – in terms of enlarged and enhanced corporate sponsorship opportunities, related marketing and promotional activities and increased international exposure – transforming the Singapore Slingers into a decidedly compelling sports entertainment media property playing on a more global stage.
